THE MURKY WATERS OF POLITICS IN NIGERIA AND BEYOND! BY Adolf Ransom Pepple

Politics, often described as the art of the possible, can indeed be a realm of unpredictability and humour, especially in underdeveloped democracies like Nigeria, particularly Rivers State. Politics is a stage where power plays, alliances shift like sand dunes, and promises are made with the flick of a wrist. As an analyst observing this chaotic dance of ambition, influence and sometimes, deceit, it becomes evident that cautionary tales are not in short supply.

I remember when I was very active in politics; how I spent valuable time reading and analyzing other people’s lives and activities like a book, all because my life and livelihood depended on what they did and decisions they took. In all the summary was that it was just eight wasted years in active politics. The only saving grace for me was that I was not a career politician in the right sense of the word, but a professional in politics. I was indirectly practising my journalism career as the Director of Publicity of my party in Bonny Local Government Area.

For young politicians and ardent followers of politicians alike, the allure of politics can be intoxicating. The promise of change, the thrill of power, and the desire to make a difference can draw individuals into its embrace. However, like a siren’s call, politics in underdeveloped democracies can lead one into treacherous waters. A typical example is Rivers State where most politicians and their followers do not really know the party they belong. They are just waiting for directive from somewhere. This is not the kind of confusion our youths should invest their time and future in.

However, to those setting their feet on this tumultuous path, a word of advice: do not invest your entire being into politics. While passion and dedication are admirable traits, placing all your hopes and dreams solely in the realm of politics can be a risky gamble. The landscape is ever-shifting, alliances are fragile, and promises often ring hollow.
Young politicians and followers must remember that life encompasses more than just the political arena. Cultivate diverse interests, build a strong support network outside of politics, and remember that personal growth and fulfillment can be found beyond the corridors of power.

In the midst of the chaos and unpredictability, maintaining a sense of perspective is crucial. Politics is but one facet of life; do not let it consume your entire existence. Nurture relationships, pursue hobbies, invest in personal development – these are the pillars that will sustain you when the political winds blow fierce.

As a writer observing the ebb and flow of politics in Bonny, I urge young politicians and followers to tread carefully. Do not let the allure of power blind you to the richness of life beyond politics. Invest in yourself, your passions, and your relationships – for these are the true foundations of a fulfilling existence. In the murky waters of politics, let wisdom be your guiding light.
I rest my case!
